1941年12月7日、日本軍による真珠湾攻撃により全世界を巻き込んだ第2次世界大戦が勃発。
以後、1945年8月の終戦まで、アメリカ本土にも物価統制、物質節約という規制の形でその影響を及ぼした。
それはジーンズ史においてもそうだった。
俗に大戦モデルと呼ばれる製品の数々には結果的に、その規制の中で発生した歪(いびつ)とマニアックなディテールを生み、多種多様な "COMBINATION" (組み合わせ) を誕生させ、特別な輝きを放つ事となった。
細部にわたる仕様変更箇所による簡素化 "SIMPLIFIED" は戦後の1946年途中まで残る事がヴィンテージの大戦モデルから見てとれる。
ジーンズ史において大戦モデルは大きく前期、中期、後期と分けられるが 「FREEWHEELERS/フリーホイーラーズ」"VANISHING WEST" ブランドにおいての大戦モデルは以下の通りだ。
☆ 1942-1943 大戦前期モデル
☆ 1944-1945 大戦中期モデル
☆ 1946-1946 中頃大戦後期モデル
今回の1944-1945大戦モデルは、まさに制約という制約、その規制が最も強く、たくさんのディテールが省略され簡素化された特異なモデルだ。
しかし "VANISHING WEST" の "Lot S601" は生地と縫製に妥協はしない。
生地はあえて色落ちしづらい濃色のインディゴ染料に変更し、またオンス引き下げの制約を拒否し従来の縦糸の番手も太くする事で、結果若干オンスを引き上げた。
オンスダウンは耐久性を損なう為、戦時下におけるジーンズー作業服の頑丈さを貫いたのだ。
縫製にも太番手糸と技量・工程を維持し、高品質と強い耐久性を目指した。
・オリジナルブランドロゴ刻印入り釦の使用を中止。
・トップ釦は、鉄製 月桂樹 ワンスター刻印ドーナツ釦を使用(フリーホイーラーズが当時の雰囲気を忠実に再現した鉄製錆付きオリジナル "月桂樹ワンスター刻印"ドーナツボタン)
・持ち出し釦は、鉄製 無地 2本爪ドーナツ釦を使用。
・リベットの使用を8つまでとする規制により、コインポケットのリベットを削除。
・残布や廃布を使用する制約より、ヘリンボーン地を内布(ポケット袋地)に使用。
縫製糸には大戦時の縫製を再現する為、太い番手の糸は使用せず運針ピッチを細かくし、巻き縫い、本縫い共にマスタードイエロー 4, 6, 8, 10, 30番手のオリジナル綿糸で各部を縫製しております。
ネームパッチはS601刻印入りの革製、赤タブ "V.WEST" は片面仕様となります。
同様生地 "Lot S506 XX 1944-45" "1st Generation Denim Jacket 1944-45 WWⅡ MODEL" とセットアップでの着用もオススメです。 -
